Piazza Castello (Castle square)

Urban planning

The beating heart of the life of ancient Taranto, Piazza Castello is a crucial hub for the activities of the city. The Town Hall, the Columns of the Doric Temple and the entrance from the ground to the Aragonese Castle overlook the square, which is now very airy, due to the many urban reorganization works of the area that saw the demolition of several buildings.

From the square, next to the columns, you enter Via Duomo, an ancient road probably already present in Greek times and today one of the main arteries of the Old City of Taranto. The Town Hall, built between 1864 and 1869 and today the seat of the Municipality of Taranto, stands on what probably dates back to the 16th century. it was the area occupied by the so-called "Captain's House", perhaps a fortified building, which housed the military governor of the city.
